Why Your Med Spa Isn't Showing Up in Google Maps

When someone searches “Botox near me” or “best med spa in [city],” Google shows three businesses in the map pack. If yours is not one of them, you are losing clients to the practices that are.
The med spa search problem
Med spa clients search differently from most local customers. They search for specific treatments: “lip filler near me,” “hydrafacial [city],” “laser hair removal [area].” They read reviews carefully, compare multiple practices, and look at photos before making a decision.
This means your Google Business Profile needs to be optimized for treatment-specific searches, not just “med spa near me.” The practices showing up in the map pack for treatment queries have profiles that explicitly list those treatments as services.
The most common profile problems
Missing or wrong primary category
Your primary category should be “Medical spa” if that is what you are. Google’s category selection guidance says to pick the most specific option that fits. Some practices use “Day spa,” “Skin care clinic,” or “Beauty salon” because those were suggested during setup. The wrong category means the wrong searches.
Incomplete service list
This is the biggest gap for most med spas. A typical profile lists three to five services. The practices in the map pack list fifteen to twenty. Every treatment should be listed:
- Botox and neurotoxin injections
- Dermal fillers (by type: lip filler, cheek filler, jawline contouring)
- Laser treatments (by type: laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing)
- Chemical peels
- Microneedling
- Body contouring
- HydraFacial
- PRP therapy
- IV therapy
- IPL photofacial
Each service should have a description that matches how potential clients search.
Few or old reviews
Med spa clients rely heavily on reviews before booking. Consumer review research shows that recency is a key factor in trust. A practice with 15 reviews from 2023 loses to one with 90 reviews from the last six months, even if the clinical quality is identical. The profile is the first impression.
Review content matters too. Reviews that mention specific treatments (“loved my Botox results,” “the HydraFacial was amazing”) give Google additional relevance signals for treatment-specific searches.
No posting activity
Google Business Profile posts expire after seven days. A med spa with no recent posts looks inactive compared to one that shares content about treatments, seasonal specials, and before/after results weekly.
No photos
Med spa clients want to see the space, the results, and the team. A profile with professional photos of treatment rooms, staff, and (with permission) before/after results gets far more engagement than one with no photos or a single stock image.
What actually fixes it
1. Audit your current profile
Before changing anything, know where you stand. What is your primary category? How many services are listed? When was the last post? How many reviews in the last 90 days? A free audit gives you this baseline.
2. Fix the category and services first
Primary category to “Medical spa.” Add every treatment you offer as a service with a description. Google’s local ranking documentation makes clear that this is the single highest-impact change because it directly affects which searches you match.
3. Build review velocity
Ask for reviews after every appointment. Follow up with clients who didn’t leave one. Respond to every review within 24 hours. A steady stream of new reviews, not a batch, is what the algorithm rewards.
4. Post weekly
Treatment highlights, seasonal specials, new services, team introductions. Content that is relevant to what potential clients are searching for right now.
5. Upload photos regularly
Treatment room photos, team photos, and (with written consent) before/after results. Tagged to the correct categories so Google indexes them properly.
The ongoing problem
Med spa owners and office managers are busy running a clinical practice. Profile management falls to whoever remembers, which usually means nobody. The profile gets set up and then sits.
That is the problem Pinwarden solves for med spas. The profile gets managed daily: optimization, posting, reviews, rank tracking. You run the practice. It runs the profile.
